Shinzo Abe’s Resignation

Who is Shinzo Abe? Abe was the longest-serving Prime Minister in Japanese history. Why did he resign at only 65 years of age, when leaders in countries like the United States are well into their 70’s? Abe has been battling ulcerative colitis for years and resigned in order to begin a new treatment for the chronic illness.

Shinzo Abe and Ulcerative Colitis

Shinzo Abe has served twice as Prime Minister of Japan. He first served in 2007 and was forced to resign in just over a year due to his battle with ulcerative colitis. A new drug helped Abe manage the symptoms of the illness in his second term which began in 2012.

Recently, Abe surpassed the longest-serving Japan Prime Minister record set by his great-uncle, Eisaku Sato. Sadly, instead of celebrating, Abe spent much of the day at Keio University Hospital in Tokyo, his second hospital visit in a week. He revealed shortly thereafter that a checkup a few months earlier had confirmed a recurrence of ulcerative colitis. He stated, “I am not confident of responding to the trust of the people while I am dealing with my illness and treatment and my health is not good. I made a judgment that I should not continue my job as Prime Minister.”[1]

Stress and Ulcerative Colitis

The main embarrassing symptom of this autoimmune disease requires rushing to the nearest restroom without a second of notice. If you don’t make it in time, you have a stinky mess. This symptom is minor in comparison to how one feels, due to lack of proper digestion because of ulceration of the colon. It’s totally understandable that a leader of an important country like Japan would have to resign under these circumstances.

I don’t know Abe, but I have known ulcerative colitis. What is the root cause of Abe’s illness? I have a strong suspicion it is stress. Although my Western medicine educated gastrointestinal doctor told me that I had done nothing to cause my ulcerative colitis, I now doubt his words.

The Covid outbreak has taken a heavy toll on Japan’s economy. Between April and June, the economy shrank at an annualized rate of 27.8% compared with the previous quarter—the sharpest contraction on record. Abe’s approval rating slumped to a record low of 34%, with 47% of the public disapproving of his performance. Without having the right tools to handle this kind of pressure—mindfulness; rest; physical activity; good nutrition; positive relationships, etc., the body can attack itself. Stress causes tension, whether physical, psychological or emotional, especially if it sets off the “fight of flight” response. This serves us well if being chased by a lion. But, persistent stress can lead to a chronic or autoimmune disease.[2]

Abe and Functional Medicine

It is my wish and mission that people like Abe who suffer from ulcerative colitis learn about Functional Medicine. Our human body is miraculous in design. If treated well, which sometimes requires lifestyle changes, healing can occur naturally. When this healing is complete, no pharmaceuticals or specialized doctor’s appointments and procedures are needed. Even better, knowledge of how to best care for ourselves is gained so we can remain healthy for many years to come.
